Range penetration

How far pay sits between a band’s endpoints.

What does it mean?

Range penetration is (base pay − minimum) ÷ (maximum − minimum), shown as a percentage. It measures position in an employer’s band, not a market percentile.

Why does it matter?

It makes pay placement easier to discuss when you know both endpoints.

How can it affect my pay or career?

0% is at the minimum and 100% at the maximum. Below 0% or above 100% means the amount is outside the supplied band; it is not a legal finding.

Try the calculator

Use the same pay period for every amount (all annual or all hourly). Enter base pay and the employer’s band—not BLS percentiles.

(Base pay − minimum) ÷ (maximum − minimum) × 100
